4/30/10 Sequoia Sweeps Westmoor
The Cherokees battled the elements to take two games from the host Rams on a blustery day in Daly City. With winds blowing up to 35mph that never let up, Sequoia exploded offensively to take the opener 15-6 and managed to hold off a late Westmoor rally to secure the second, 8-6.
Erik Baxter (6-0) went the distance to pick up the win in game 1 and helped himself at the plate as well, going 3 for 3 with a double and 4 RBI. Baxter got support up and down the lineup. Senior catcher Nick Davenport went 3 for 3 walked twice and scored three times, Danny Kocjan singled twice and added two sacrifice flies amounting to 3 RBI and Junior shortstop Nick Brown and sophomore right-fielder Jake Mauldin each added two hits and two RBI.
Mauldin took the mound in game 2 and chipped in with 5 solid outings to improve his record to 2-2. Kyle Luttrell had two hits, including a double and Matt Eastman hit a booming 3 run triple to drive in 2 and pace the offense. The Cherokees would need nearly every one of their runs as the Rams fought valiantly in the 7th, plating one and nearly tying the game off of Eastman, but the umpires ruled that what appeared to be a game-tying single to left had actually hit the Westmoor baserunner ending the game. The ruling gave the Cherokees (15-5-1, 8-0) their 8th consecutive league victory setting the stage for a huge showdown with El Camino of South San Francisco. The Colts knocked off San Mateo on Thursday to run their league record to 9-0.
Sequoia will travel to El Camino this coming Tuesday, and the two teams will flip and play at Sequoia on Thursday. The Cherokees are expecting their largest crowd of the season for Thursday's home game, with first place in the Peninsula Athletic League's Ocean Division hanging in the balance.
